These are US Army Corps of Engineers Officers Collar Insignia. These collar insignia are authorized for wear on an engineer officers dress uniform. Collar insignia comes as a pair of 2, one for each side of the collar.
The Corps of Engineers traces its linage back to the American Revolution when the Continental Congress granted authority for the creation of a Chief Engineer for the Army in 1775 and then subsequently in 1779 Congress authorized a corps of engineers. The Corps of Engineers we know today came into being in 1802 when then President Thomas Jefferson was authorized to “organize and establish a Corps of Engineers”. Said Corps of Engineers was to be stationed at West point which ties us into the insignia’s history. The castle logo traces back to 1841 when West Point cadets wore personal insignia known as “gold castles” on their uniforms as they became commissioned officers. In 1902 the Corps Castle was formally adopted by the Army as the insignia for the Corps of Engineers. The turreted castle was adapted as the symbol of the engineers due to it representing the two primary responsibilities as an engineer, offense and defense.
