Description
Sold as a Set of 2
These are US Army Cavalry Officers Collar Insignia. These collar insignia are authorized for wear on a Calvary officers dress uniform. Collar insignia comes as a pair of 2, one for each side of the collar.
The crossed swords insignia traces back to the 1850 where they were first authorized for wear by Dragoon officers. In 1858 both Dragoon and Calvary officers would wear crossed swords but could be distinguished from one another by the orientation of the swords. Dragoons were ”edge up” while Calvary ones were “edge down”. This would only go on for so long before the Army passed regulations specifying the all saber insignia would displayed edge up. The passage of the Army Organization Act of 1950 brought an end to the Calvary branch as an independent force by merging it with the Armored Forces branch to create the armor branch. Despite this change the role of Calvary remained the same: focusing on recon, security, escort and combat. As technology progressed so did the Calvary, the adoption of helicopters and greater usage of armored vehicles gave way to air and armored Calvary units that have evolved into today’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams. Today just one active duty division retains the Calvary designation (1st Calvary Division) however the Calvary’s influence on armor and aviation is honored by the officers and enlisted who are authorized to wear the famed crossed sabers.
