This is a USGI Phrobis III M9 Bayonet. The M9 bayonet was successor to the venerable M7 bayonet that had been in service since the adoption of the M16 in the later 1960’s. As the 1990’s were coming to a close the US military moved to update its bayonet for more modern warfare. The idea was to create a better all-around knife that could be used for survival, fighting and as a bayonet. This was done by incorporating several features across both the knife and sheath to increase its utility. These features include the saw back blade, bayonet loop and lug, wire cutting sheath, flat tip screw driver and a built-in blade sharpener on the sheath’s backside. One little known feature that never saw much usage was the replaceable blades. Unlike most bayonets the M9 does not have a full tang blade, this was done so that blades could be taken off and swapped for fresh or specialty blades. While a unique feature for most bayonets this design choice led to durability issues with the M9 as the screw in blade is prone to coming loose with usage. The built-in wire cutter is another cool feature as this was an idea pulled from the AK-47/74 rifles bayonet. The blade has a machined hole near the tip that when slipped over the lug on the bottom of the sheath and pushed together can be used to cut through mild gauge wire. Overall, while this bayonet had a relatively short service life compared to its predecessors it is loved by collectors and cloners alike and would make a great add to the end of any M16 rifle.
